Hey everyone and welcome back to another Momentum Monday! In today’s blog, we’re going to be talking about the latest and greatest in virtual reality technology. That’s right, today we’re looking at the best virtual reality headsets.

Virtual Reality is best defined as a simulated experience that can either mimic the real world or be completely different from it. Virtual reality applications include entertainment (such as video games), education, or augmented reality. 

The history of the concept of virtual reality can be traced back to the European Renaissance, but the widespread commercial distribution of virtual reality technology wasn’t popularized until the 1990s. The first virtual reality headset was released in 1991 by gaming company Sega. Since then, virtual reality headsets have exploded in technological advancements as well as in popularity among consumers. In today’s blog post, we’re going to be looking at the best virtual reality headsets on the market.

In today’s blog, we are examining the best virtual reality headsets available today. These include:

• Oculus Quest 2
• HP Reverb G2
• HTC Vive Cosmos
• Pansonite VR Headset
• Sony PlayStation VR

Oculus Quest 2

The Oculus Quest 2 is commonly considered the best virtual reality headset on the market. Oculus has been a major player in the virtual reality industry for many years now. The Oculus Rift was the first big player in this type of technology and Oculus is only continuing that legacy with the Quest 2. 

According to PCMag, the Oculus Quest 2 is a “$300 standalone VR headset powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, a considerable upgrade in power over the original Quest and its Snapdragon 835. It offers a comprehensive VR experience in a single package with no wires needed (except to charge the headset), and currently provides the highest resolution of any consumer VR headset at 1,920 by 1,832 per eye.” 

The Oculus Quest 2 allows users to play either tethered or untethered with games from the Quest library or with PC-specific VR games like the ones found on Steam. The console’s price combined with its usability, adaptability, and deep game library makes it a very attractive virtual reality headset to many users.

HP Reverb G2

The HP Reverb G2 is a $600 piece of equipment with stunning visuals, high comfort level, and great audio. Unfortunately, it also has mediocre controllers. 

The second-highest price on this list, the HP Reverb is also one of the least user-friendly devices, which is a shame considering this piece of equipment is top-notch in visual quality, audio quality, and accessibility to games. The HP Reverb G2 gives users access to Microsoft’s native Windows 10 VR ecosystem, and also bridges with Steam VR and works with those games and apps, too.

The biggest problem with the HP Reverb G2 is its controller tracking which produces quite a few “dead zones” for players. It is enough to be irritating to the user, though not enough to seriously impact game play. Its controller-tracking is acceptable, but not exceptional. 

RoadToVR describes this device, saying, “For a $600 headset, Reverb G2 delivers a strong value thanks to its excellent visuals and acceptable tracking. It feels like an especially good fit for simulator-focused use-cases where resolving power is a significant contributor to the experience.

HTC Vive Cosmos

HTC’s Vive Cosmos is the upgraded version of the original Vive headset. This version of the product boasts a higher resolution and uses outward-facing cameras to monitor motion tracking. Much like the Oculus Quest 2, the Vive Cosmos works with SteamVR and has its own set of VR software in the form of its “Viveport” store. 

The HTC Vive Cosmos offers a comprehensive whole-room VR, but may be unattractive to customers for its pricepoint. The HTC Vive Cosmos starts at $699. Users may pay $899 for Vive Cosmos Elite, which brings back external base stations to augment how it follows your head and motion controllers in order to better track the user’s motions. Unfortunately, both these prices are considerably higher than that of the Oculus Quest 2, which is why the Vive Cosmos is less popular than the Oculus Quest 2. 

Pansonite 3D VR Glasses

At just $40, The Pansonite 3D VR Glasses are the closest you can get to a VR headset without paying an arm and a leg for them. The device is simple, a combination of the PlayStation VR and Google’s Daydream. The device is used for app-based virtual reality, using the player’s smartphone. 

While it doesn’t come with its own gaming library and does rely on another device to work, the Pansonite 3D VR glasses are simple to use, easy to set up, and offers users an immersive 3D experience for a fraction of the cost that other devices go for. 

Sony PlayStation VR

The Sony PlayStation VR is a piece of gaming equipment. To use this VR headset, a player only needs the headset, a PS4 or PS5, and a PlayStation Camera. Thi camera is included in most VR bundles and is a feature of the recently released PlayStation 5.

The PlayStation VR gives users access to a lot of PS VR games such as Moss, Rez Infinite, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Five Nights at Freddie’s: Help Wanted, etc.

The PlayStation VR Bundle, including all the necessary pieces of equipment, generally runs for about $350. While the device isn’t as receptive or sensitive as other VR headsets on this list, it is generally well-liked by users and is priced competitively to the other products on this list.
